About artist Robert Camacho

Awakening (Self Portrait) by Robert CamachoRobert studied illustration and fine art at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Art Students League in New York City. He also studied painting at the Instituto Politechno Internationale Della Moda in Florence, Italy. His exposure to the gothic and renaissance artists of Italy greatly influenced the visual style of his later pieces. After working for Marvel Comics as a freelance colorist for a few years, he left to become a freelance illustrator and fine artist. His artwork has been exhibited at the National Arts Club (NYC), SOL Gallery (NYC), the Society of Illustrators (NYC) and the Heckscher Museum of Art (Huntington, NY).

"I tend to work in a variety of media. When painting I usually start with a acrylic base over which are applied thin glazes of oils in a medium that decrease the drying time. I also use gold leaf as a background on certain pieces-I like the graphic look it imparts to a painting and the Medieval atmosphere it creates. I've also branched out into wood box constructions that are a cross between two dimensional painting and three dimensional sculpture in the round. In these constructions are placed various found objects, old photos and other items that help to convey an idea or theme. I've also explored other media including monotypes, wood block prints, comic art, digital artwork, web design and photography."

"Recently, I've started a new concept in fine art, one using the human remains of the client incorporated into a work of art. This idea, called Art After Death involves designing a box construction around a specific human bone of the art patron. When they become deceased, this part is removed from the body, defleshed and then inserted into the artwork. In this manner you can live on for eternity as both a priceless heirloom and a provocative work of fine art."
