The Garbage Dump can be interpreted in several ways, all interrelated to the obsessive consumer culture that defines our modern lives. It represents our throw-away culture and the resulting pollution that is the by-product of it. Built-in obsolescence and the desire to constantly upgrade add to the problem. These desires are fueled by the advertising machine; Buy this product and you will be happy, beautiful, successful, content. On another level, the corporations that manufacture these products are themselves viewed as objects of refuse; their collective icons gathered up and tossed into the landfill. Then there is the idea of visual pollution. Drive down any main street in the country and your eyes are assaulted by a barrage of advertisements all vying for your attention. These messages work on many levels to create a feeding frenzy of buying and selling, not to mention the fact that most are just plain ugly and distracting.
