Boxer II
One in a series of monotypes exploring the dark undertones of the sport. I chose boxing as a subject matter while learning the monotype process. The physical violence and bursts of action lent itself well to the sense of motion and immediacy inherent in the monotype process. Monotypes, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a form of printmaking. In this case I put a rough drawing of the two boxers (drawn in the reverse of how I want it to look) under a large clear piece of Mylar (thin plastic). I paint onto the Mylar with oils, working as fast as possible before the paint starts to dry out and using the drawing as a guide. When satisfied with the painting, I then carefully flip the Mylar over onto a wet piece of thick watercolor paper. A few large blankets are put over that and then it is run through a hand-cranked press. The pressure of the press transfers the image onto the paper and when peeling off the Mylar, you end up with results that are spontaneous and often difficult to obtain through more conventional painting techniques.
