This wood construction was created after my involvement in the comics industry, coloring a popular series for Marvel Comics. No, it wasn't the state of the comics business that I was commenting on but the use of the comic book panels that I found interesting; the ability to tell a story as the eye moves from panel to panel, a form of storytelling that is almost instinctual and able to convey meaning without words. This particular piece was made following the death of someone I knew and an attempt to symbolically move through the days following a death. Each panel has a headstone literally burned into the landscape around it, the blackness so dark that light cannot be reflected off it. They become emotional black holes, draining the emotions from all who are forced to move through its panels. The ring patterns in the wood resemble landscapes and fields. The colors, the changes in the seasons. The end of this short story is unresolved and without closure. As in reality, the ghosts of memories linger on to haunt our lives.
